La Paz to Lake Titicaca Day Tour

In this tour, you will notice the contrasts between the strong Catholic influences and the beliefs of the Aymara culture found in Copacabana. At Cerro Calvario, you will see Aymara Yatiris (masters) performing spiritual cleanings called “challas” or coca-leaf readings.

On Sun Island, you will visit Incas’ structures built to worship the Sun God, pre-Columbian terraces and the fountain of youth in Inca mythology. You will have spectacular views of the town, lake and surrounding mountains.

You can request your Travel Advisor a visit to the Island of the Moon, also known as Koati Island. Here, there is an Inca temple called the Palace of the Virgins of the Sun or Iñakuyu, and this site was an Acllahuasi or house of the chosen women, where the so-called Virgins of the Sun lived and learned several trades, especially weaving.

Full Day LA PAZ TO LAKE TITICACA DAY TOUR

Transfer to Copacabana:

Morning pick up from the hotel lobby (hotel booked on your own) and transfer from La Paz to Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca (duration: 3 ½ – 4 hours, altitude: 3,840 m / 12,595 ft).

Tour of Copacabana:

You will start your tour by visiting the Basilica—a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. The treasure inside is the Shrine de la Virgen de Copacabana—a statue carved in the 15th century, which is said to be responsible for countless miracles. It is also said that if she is removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town. It is worth noting that in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, you will also find Aymara Yatiris (masters) performing spiritual cleanings called “challas” or coca-leaf readings.

Lake Titicaca Tour* – Sun Island and Pilkokaina Ruins:

After your tour of Copacabana, you will travel by boat to the Port of Pilkokaina in the southern part of Sun Island on Lake Titicaca–legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire. Here, you will enjoy a traditional lunch, in the open air, called Apthapi before continuing on your tour. After lunch, enjoy a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake and a visit to the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way.

Then, you will start your walk down to the Port of Yumani. Along the way, you will visit the Escalera del Inca, a stairway leading to the Inca Fountain. It was once believed to be a fountain of youth, and a place where ceremonies dedicated to water and insemination of earth took place.

After the tour, you will take a boat back to Copacabana (duration: 1 hour). Transfer back to your hotel in La Paz.

*There is not enough time to visit Moon Island in a full day tour from/to La Paz.
