    2. DAY 2 Transfer to Copacabana and Sun Island

      Transfer to Copacabana and Tour:

Pick up from the hotel lobby and transfer to Copacabana (duration: 3.5–4 hours, altitude: 3,840 m / 12,595 ft).

At your arrival, you will start your tour by visiting the Basilica— a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. The treasure inside is the Shrine of Virgen de Copacabana — a statue carved in the 15th century, believed to be responsible for countless miracles. It is said that if she’s removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town.

Next, you may walk the 12 Stations of the Cross (optional), which devout Catholics visit throughout the Easter season of Lent. It is a great walk (duration: 1 ½ hours) as it will help you understand the layout of the town and the position of nearby islands. The views of Lake Titicaca on the way up, and at the summit, are worth the uphill walking. It is worth noting that in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, you’ll also find Yatiris (masters) performing spiritual cleanings called “challas” or coca leaf readings, all part of the Aymara culture.

      Transfer to Sun Island:

After your tour of Copacabana, you will travel by boat to the Port of Pilkokaina in the southern part of Sun Island on Lake Titicaca–legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire–where you will enjoy a traditional lunch, in the open air, called Apthapi.

After lunch, enjoy a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake and a visit to the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way. From the lodge, behold an amazing sunset (tour duration: 8 hours approx.).

    3. DAY 3 Escalera del Inca and Tiwanaku

Escalera del Inca and Transfer to Tiwanaku:

After enjoying breakfast, you will walk down to the Port of Yumani and visit the Escalera del Inca, a stairway leading to the Inca Fountain, once believed to be a fountain of youth. Ceremonies dedicated to water and insemination of earth took place here. After a short trek with wonderful panoramic views of Lake Titicaca, you will take the boat back to Copacabana (duration: 1 hour) and then be transferred to Tiwanaku (duration: 3–4 hours).

Half Day Tiwanaku Ruins and Transfer to La Paz:
After lunch, visit the Spiritual and Political Centre of the Tiwanaku Culture, which includes beautiful monumental stone buildings that survive in the protected archaeological zones. See the Kalasasaya Temple (Sun), the legendary Sun Gate, the Semi-subterranean temple (Earth), the Akapana Pyramid, and the Puma Punku ceremonial center. Visit the local museums and enjoy an impressive collection of artifacts and tools of ancient civilizations, in addition to monumental monoliths (duration: 1.5–2 hours). Finally, transfer to your hotel in La Paz (duration: 1.5 hours).

Full Day Uyuni Tour (Uyuni Salt Flats):
Morning pick-up from the Uyuni airport, where you will meet your guide to travel together to the amazing Uyuni Salt Flats, the world’s largest salt desert. On your way, visit the train cemetery and take beautiful pictures onboard old 19th- and 20th-century steam locomotives. Stop at the town of Colchani (20 minutes from Uyuni), where you’ll learn the artisanal salt extraction process from locals. The region has two marked seasons: wet and dry. The rainy or wet season usually begins at the end of November and lasts through March. The dry season is typically from April to November. Both seasons offer unique experiences of the Uyuni Salt Flats, so you should plan your trip based on what you want to do.

During the rainy season, the Bolivia salt flats are covered in water. As such, travelers can capture amazing pictures of the Salar’s mirror effect, but access to certain areas is limited. In addition, excessive rain may cause some tours to cancel. On the other hand, during the dry season, temperatures drop and the salt ground hardens. As such, visitors can explore the iconic Incahuasi Island, and other areas, usually inaccessible during the wet season.

A PARADISE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY: At nearly 12,000 square kilometers in size, and an extraordinary flatness, the Bolivia Salt Flats provide an endless horizon, which allows photographers to experiment with perspective and proportion. The results yield very creative and fun pictures that will surely go up on your walls.

In addition, during the rainy season, the salt flats are covered with a thin layer of water, which creates an amazing mirror effect for truly breathtaking pictures. The effect is one of floating among the clouds!

OFF-ROAD ADVENTURE: At over 3,650 m (nearly 12,000 ft.), the Bolivia salt flats can prove to be a challenging environment. The journey through the flats requires experienced drivers who also play the role of mechanics, as it is not uncommon for vehicles to break down. Only rugged, mechanical 4×4 vehicles are allowed in the salt desert because of the inhospitable environment. Also, it is very easy to get lost in such an expansive landscape, so it is important to hire good quality guides from a reputable tour company who know their way around. Finally, you can satisfy your inner explorer and visit beautiful caves, lakes and islands in the surroundings.

SPEND THE NIGHT AT A HOTEL MADE OF SALT: Believe it or not, the Bolivia Salt Flats are home to several salt hotels that have sprung in the last few decades to accommodate the growing number of tourists. And they are not as rugged as people might think. Many of them offer great amenities, such as hot water, spacious rooms and even Internet service. The experience of sleeping in a salt hotel is definitely worth putting on your bucket list.
