Upon arrival, you will start your tour by visiting the Basilica, a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. The treasure inside is the Shrine of La Virgen de Copacabana — a statue carved during the 15th century, which is said to be responsible for countless miracles. It is also believed that if she’s removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town.

Next, you can take an optional walk through the 12 Stations of the Cross, as devout Catholics do throughout the Easter season. This uphill walk will help you understand the layout of the town and the position of nearby islands (duration: 1½ hours). The views of Lake Titicaca on the way up and at the summit are worth the exercise.

It is also worth noting that, in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, you will also find Yatiris (Aymara masters) performing spiritual cleanings called “challas” or coca leaf readings on the streets.

      Transfer to Sun Island:

After your tour of Copacabana, you will be transferred by boat to the Port of Pilkokaina in the southern part of Sun Island on Lake Titicaca – the legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire – where you will be welcomed by the Lodge staff. Here, you will enjoy a traditional lunch, in the open air, called Apthapi, before continuing on your tour. After lunch, enjoy a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake and a visit to the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way (duration: 45 minutes). The lodge is situated in the halfway up of the island, from where you will behold an amazing sunset.

On your way, you will visit the cemetery of trains, where you can take playful and even artistic pictures on board the remains of 19th and 20th-century steam locomotives. Next, you will visit the town of Colchani (20 minutes from Uyuni) where you will learn the artisanal salt extraction process from local inhabitants, and maybe even purchase salt from Uyuni. On this trip you will also see piles of extracted salt and see up-close the “ojos del salar” or mineralized water springs bursting out of the salt flat.

The next stop is Incahuasi Island, located in the middle of the Uyuni Salt Flat, where you can see the famous giant cacti that are up to 10 meters high and enjoy a short walk to the top of the island to admire wonderful panoramic views of the salt flats. Lunch will be served in the middle of the salt flat for an exclusive experience like no other. This specific tour is designed for adults. However, Intense Bolivia offers family-oriented tours with a focus on child-friendly activities and a slower pace. Inquire about these options if traveling with children.

The tour includes all transportation between destinations in Peru and Bolivia, including airport transfers, train journeys, and comfortable motor coaches. In Bolivia, you will benefit from private transfers for a more personalized experience.

Altitude sickness is associated with headache, fatigue, nausea and malaise. The symptoms do not always appear and depend on each person.

We recommend you to rest for at least 3 hours upon arrival, eat light as digestion might be slower during your first days, and drink plenty of fluids.

You may find some medicine against the altitude sickness, like “sorojchi pills” (it contains caffeine), or people may recommend you to drink coca tea. However, both options are not advisable for people with heart diseases, respiratory disorders, diabetes or high blood pressure. We recommend that you consult your physician before your travel.

A natural medicine, like the “Muña” tea (Andean mint), will help for a good digestion.

We have partnered with respected hotels to secure competitive rates on your behalf, and we ensure that the hotels we work with provide the highest levels of service and comfort at the best values.

However, your satisfaction is our priority, and you are free to select the hotel that best suits your needs and expectations for the trip.

The Expedition (tourist class) features panoramic windows and comfortable seats. Snacks are not included.

The Vistadome (superior class) has wider panoramic windows, the seats are more comfortable and spacious, plus it offers snacks on board and informative audio. There is a live cultural performance and a fashion show of alpaca garments if you are traveling from Machu Picchu.

You can also travel on board The PeruRail Vistadome Observatory train, which features an observatory car with live music and typical dances, that will provide you with a unique and relaxing experience.

The region has two marked seasons: wet and dry. The rainy or wet season usually begins at the end of November and lasts through March. The dry season is typically from April to November. Both seasons offer unique experiences of the Uyuni Salt Flats, so you should plan your trip based on what you want to do.

During the rainy season, the Bolivia salt flats are covered in water. As such, travelers can capture amazing pictures of the Salar’s mirror effect, but access to certain areas is limited. In addition, excessive rain may cause some tours to cancel. On the other hand, during the dry season, temperatures drop and the salt ground hardens. As such, visitors can explore the iconic Incahuasi Island, and other areas, usually inaccessible during the wet season.
