2 Day Lake Titicaca Tour & Tiahuanaco Ruins

2 DAY LAKE TITICACA TOUR & TIAHUANACO RUINS – OVERVIEW

The Lake Titicaca Tour allows you to see the contrast to the beliefs of the Aymara culture and the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana. You can walk to Cerro Calvario to have a panoramic view of the lake, surrounding mountains, and the colorful Copacabana town.

Besides, you will visit the Sun Island, where there are several structures made by the Incas, like Pilkokaina palace, pre-Columbian terraces, and the Incas’ stairs. This legendary island is the birthplace of the Inca Empire.

Also, in this package, you will visit the majestic Tiwanaku Ruins. The remains of a once-powerful pre-Columbian civilization, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2 DAY LAKE TITICACA TOUR & TIAHUANACO RUINS – ITINERARY

DAY 1

Transfer & Tour of Copacabana on Lake Titicaca:
Pick up from the lobby of your hotel in La Paz – booked on your own. Transport to Copacabana (duration: 3 ½  – 4 hours, altitude: 3,840m / 12,595ft).

At your arrival, visit the Basilica, a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. Inside is the Shrine de la Virgen de Copacabana — a statue carved in the 15th century believed to be responsible for countless miracles. People believe that if she’s removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town.

We recommend you take an optional walk (duration: 1 ½ hours) through the 12 Stations of the Cross, as devout Catholics do during the Easter season. This great uphill walk will help you understand the layout of the town and the position of nearby islands. The views of Lake Titicaca, on the way up, are also worth the journey. It is worth noting that in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, you will also find Yatiris (Aymara masters) performing spiritual cleanings called “challas” or coca leaf readings.

Boat Ride & Sun Island Tour:
After your tour of Copacabana, transfer by boat to the Port of Pilkokaina in the southern part of Sun Island on Lake Titicaca–legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire– where you will be welcomed by the Lodge staff. Here, you will enjoy a traditional lunch, in the open air, called Apthapi, before continuing on your tour.

After lunch, enjoy a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake and a visit to the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way. The lodge is situated in the halfway up of the island and requires a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake and a visit to the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way (duration: 45 minutes). From the lodge, behold an amazing sunset (duration: 8 hours approx.). Evening free.

Overnight on Sun Island.

DAY 2

Escalera del Inca Tour (Sun Island) & Transfer to Tiahuanaco:
After enjoying breakfast at your lodge, walk down to the Port of Yumani and visit the Escalera del Inca, a stairway leading to the Inca Fountain, once believed to be a fountain of youth. This was a place where ceremonies dedicated to water and insemination of earth took place. After a short trek with wonderful panoramic views of Lake Titicaca, take a boat back to Copacabana (duration: 1 hour) to then be transferred to Tiahuanaco (duration: 3 – 4 hours).

Half Day Tiwanaku Ruins and Transfer to La Paz:
After lunch, visit the Spiritual and Political Centre of the Tiwanaku Culture, which includes beautiful monumental stone buildings that survive in the protected archaeological zones. See the Kalasasaya Temple (Sun), the legendary Sun Gate, the Semi-subterranean temple (Earth), the Akapana Pyramid, the Puma Punku ceremonial center, as well as the museums where you will enjoy an impressive collection of objects and tools of ancient civilizations in addition to monumental monoliths (duration: 1 ½ – 2 hours). 7 DAY BOLIVIA TRAVEL ADVENTURE THROUGH THE SALT FLATS SOUTH AMERICA – ITINERARY

DAY 1

Morning transfer from the Airport:
International flight Lima or Cusco – La Paz (booked on your own). Private transport from the airport to your hotel in La Paz.

City Tour La Paz and Moon Valley Half Day:
Start your Bolivia travel adventure with a journey through the city of La Paz. First, you’ll meet your guide at your hotel to begin your tour with the Witch Doctor’s Market. Here you will find herbs, folk remedies and fascinating ingredients used in Aymara rituals. You will also stop at the typical handicrafts market of Sagarnaga Street where you can acquire fun souvenirs.

The tour continues to the San Francisco Colonial Church (museum not included) and Plaza Murillo. See the colonial architecture of the Cathedral, Government Palace, and National Congress located on this main square. Afterwards, visit the charming, cobble-stoned street of Jaen. It is one of the last colonial streets of downtown La Paz, and home to a range of museums, shops, bars and restaurants. Transfer to Plaza España to take the Yellow and Green Lines of the city’s sky lift towards the southern area of the city. Enjoy birds-eye views of the residential areas of Obrajes, Calacoto and La Florida.

Finally, venture out of the city towards Moon Valley characterized by an amazing display of rock erosion patterns. The landscape is like something from out of this world! DAY 2

Transfer to Copacabana and Tour:
Today your Bolivia travel adventure continues with a trip to Copacabana on Lake Titicaca (duration: 3 ½ – 4 hours, altitude: 3,840m / 12,595ft).

At your arrival, you will visit the Basilica, a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. The treasure inside is the Shrine de la Virgen de Copacabana — a statue carved in the 15th century believed to be responsible for countless miracles. It is said that if she’s removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town.

Next, walk through the 12 Stations of the Cross (optional), as devout Catholics do during the Easter season (duration: 1 ½ hours). The uphill walk will help you understand the layout of the town and the position of the nearby islands. In addition, the views of Lake Titicaca on the way up, and at the summit, are worth the exercise.

It is worth noting that in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, remarkably you will also find Yatiris (Aymara masters) performing spiritual cleansings called “challas” or coca leaf readings.

Transfer to Sun Island:
After your tour, you will take a boat to the Port of Pilkokaina on the southern part of Sun Island, legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire. The La Estancia Eco-Lodge staff will be there to greet you and help you with your belongings. The lodge is situated at the top of the island and requires a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake. Visit the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way (duration: 1- 1 ½ hours). From the lodge, behold an amazing sunset.

Afterwards, enjoy a unique picnic experience surrounded by nothing but a salt desert. Take advantage of the extraordinary flatness of the place to play with proportion and perspective in your photographs.

Private Cooperative Mines Tour in Cerro Rico:
The first stop this morning is the miner’s market, “Calvario”, where you can buy coca leaves and cigarettes for the miners you’ll meet today. Continue on to the Konty, Korimayu or Pailaviri silver mines to meet local miners and see the mines first-hand.  The mining of silver began in colonial times and it continues today with little change in working conditions or mining methods. The miners’ rituals have not changed over time as well, and you will see them pray to TATA CKAJCHA (the father of miners), and make the “Ch’alla” to the “TÍO “(God of the mines, owner of the silver). Afterwards, brief stop at the Cooperative Miners Silver Foundation and the local museum.

12 DAY INTENSE BOLIVIA TOUR PACKAGE – ITINERARY

DAY 1

International flight Lima or Cusco – La Paz (booked on your own). Private transport WITH TRANSFER PERSON from the airport to your hotel in La Paz.

City Tour La Paz and Moon Valley Half Day:
Pick up from the lobby of your hotel to begin your tour of the best Bolivia destinations. Start with a visit  to the most important highlights of the city of La Paz. These include the Witch Doctor’s Market (where you can find herbs, folk remedies and fascinating ingredients used in Aymara rituals), and the typical handicrafts market of Sagarnaga Street.

The tour continues to the San Francisco Colonial Church (Museum not included) and Plaza Murillo where the Cathedral, the Government Palace, and the National Congress buildings are located. After this you will visit the charming, cobble-stoned street of Jaen, one of the last colonial streets of downtown La Paz, and home to a range of museums, shops, bars and restaurants. You will then be transferred to Plaza España to take the Yellow and Green Lines of the city’s sky lift towards the southern area of the city. Here you will enjoy panoramic views of the residential areas of Obrajes, Calacoto and La Florida.

Finally, the tour ends with a fascinating visit to Moon Valley, an amazing display of rock erosion patterns like something from out of this world. You will also have the opportunity to visit and enjoy the small gallery of celebrated local potter, Mario Sarabia (duration: 4 hours). Return to your hotel.

Evening free.

Overnight in La Paz.

DAY 2

Transfer to Copacabana and Tour:
Pick up from the lobby of your hotel. Transport to Copacabana (duration: 3 ½ – 4 hours, altitude: 3,840m / 12,595ft).

At your arrival, you will start your tour by visiting the Basilica, a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. The treasure inside is the Shrine de la Virgen de Copacabana — a statue carved in the 15th century which is said to be responsible for countless miracles. It’s also said that if she’s removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town.

Next, you may walk the 12 Stations of the Cross (optional), which devout Catholics visit throughout the Easter season. This walk (duration: 1 ½ hours) will help you understand the layout of the town and the position of nearby islands. The views of Lake Titicaca on the way up, and at the summit, are worth the uphill walking.

It is worth noting that in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, you’ll also find Yatiris (Aymara masters) performing spiritual cleansings called “challas” and coca leaf readings.

Transfer to Sun Island:

After your tour, you willl take a boat to the Port of Pilkokaina on the southern part of Sun Island, legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire.

Evening free.

Overnight on Sun Island.

After breakfast, you will visit the Red Lagoon (also known as Colorada lagoon), home to the famous James Flamingos, unique in its species, and other local fauna. The lagoon itself is very special as it sometimes turns a deep red color because of the combination of reddish sediment in its surface, and the pigmentation of a certain type of seaweed at its bottom. After, you will visit the Sol de Mañana Geysers, an area with much volcanic activity, full of boiling mud lakes and sulfur steam pools. Continue on to Polkes, where you can enjoy its natural hot springs, and you will pass through the Dalí’s Desert, an extremely arid area with landscapes very similar to Salvador Dalí’s surreal vast desert paintings. Afterwards, you will visit the white and green lagoon with its impressive emerald color and towering Llicancabur Volcano as a backdrop.

It is an oasis with a unique and isolated ecosystem where giant cacti thrive (up to 10m. or 32ft. high).  Afterwards, you will enjoy a unique picnic experience, as lunch will be served in the middle of the Salar. NOTE:  Incahuasi Island, Tunupa Volcano, and Chantani Museum will not be visited during rainy season. Tunupa Volcano and Chantani Museum can be replaced for Chiquini Caves, only in dry season.

Then, you will visit the town of Colchani (20 min. from Uyuni) where you’ll learn the artisanal salt extraction process from local artisans, and maybe even purchase salt from Uyuni. Transfer to your hotel in Colchani (20 min. from Uyuni).

Evening free.
