SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31st: Uyuni Salt Flats

Meeting point at 09:30 hrs at a hotel in Uyuni (to be confirmed). Depart at 10:00 hrs to the amazing Uyuni Salt Flats, the world’s largest salt desert, with an expanse of more tan 12,000 square km (7,455 sq mi). On your way, you will visit the cemetery of trains where you can take playful and even artistic pictures on board the remains of 19th and 20th century steam locomotives. Next, visit the town of Colchani (20 min. from Uyuni) where you’ll learn the artisanal salt extraction process from local artisans, and maybe even purchase salt from Uyuni.

Afterwards, make your way into the Salar where you will stop to see stacks of extracted salt and the “ojos del salar” or mineralized water springs bursting out of the salt flats. Next, you will visit the Dakar marker surrounded by flags from all over the world. Then, enjoy a unique picnic experience, as lunch is served in the middle of the salt flat. After lunch, continue onto Incahuasi Island, on the Salar, an oasis with a unique and isolated ecosystem where giant cacti thrive (up to 10m. or 32ft. high). NOTE: Incahuasi Island may not be visited if it is raining. After exploring the island, take advantage of the salar’s extraordinary flatness to play with proportion and perspective for amazing and fun pictures. Witness an amazing sunset as the sky explodes in color over the Uyuni Salt Flats. A light snack will be served.

Enjoy a BBQ dinner in the middle of the Uyuni Salt Flats, and a nice cup of tea or coffee as you contemplate the impeccable starry night sky of the Salar. Your driver and guide will set up your tent (max. 2 people per tent) directly on the salted ground. However, you will sleep comfortably on an inflatable mattress with a sleeping bag and blankets to keep you warm. After dinner, you will have the opportunity to take amazing night photos using long exposure tricks to capture unbelievable images, as your guide explains the Andean Cosmo Vision of the stars. At midnight, enjoy a New Year’s toast and fireworks as you dance the night away. Music will be available until 3:00 hrs.

Note: Portable bathroom is provided.
