TRAVEL TO BOLIVIA: GENERAL INFORMATION

Location:  Bolivia is located in South America. It is nestled between Peru, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil.

Official Language:  Spanish

Seasons:  Winter is June through September and summer is December through March (rainy season).

Currency:  Bolivianos (however, US Dollars are also accepted)

Exchange Rate:  Approximately 6.91 Bolivianos for each US $1.00 and 8.15 Bolivianos for each €1.00

Electricity:  Voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Many outlets in Bolivia are round or square, so consider bringing an adapter.

Vaccines:  Although not compulsory, we recommend getting a Yellow Fever shot 10 days prior to your trip, especially if traveling to the tropical region or jungle of Bolivia. Please talk to your doctor about other vaccines you may need.

TRAVEL TO BOLIVIA: GEOGRAPHY & WEATHER

Bolivia has a varied geography, which presents a challenge when packing for your trip because of the differences in climate. Please note that many popular destinations in Bolivia like the Uyuni Salt Flats, Lake Titicaca and Tiwanaku are located in the highlands at high altitudes. As such, you should take precautions in order to avoid or minimize the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Plains & Jungle (Beni, Santa Cruz & Pando):  Characterized by a tropical climate (very hot & humid) with average temperatures reaching 30ºC (86ºF). For this region, pack comfortable, breathable clothes (i.e. cotton), wear sunblock, use sunglasses and a sun cap. Also, make sure to bring plenty of insect repellent.

Highlands (La Paz, Oruro & Potosí):  The highlands present drastic temperature changes throughout the day. Although the climate is generally arid and cold with strong winds, temperatures can average 18ºC (65ºF) during the day, and drop to 0°C (32ºF) at night, during winter.

Valleys (Cochabamba, Sucre & Tarija):  Valleys have generally comfortable, spring-like temperatures all year. You should wear relaxed, breathable clothes. Garments should include long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect you from insect bites. Pack a flashlight, sunglasses, sunblock and mosquito repellent and a small backpack to carry your belongings.
